A Generation with no Fear of God is the Walking Dead

The age of intellectualism has deceived us into thinking that we can reduce the Holiness and sovereignty of God to something so common to man thus failing tremendously in reverencing our very creator. Modern day christianity has adopted a watered down gospel that only emphasizes the loving nature of God, choosing to disregard that the same God who so loves us is equally capable of righteous judgement.

One dimensional View of God

When we choose to only view God in a singular dimension of love we lose the fear of God which is rooted in the constant terror and awe of his character. Only when we understand the multi-dimensional character of God can we truly appreciate the power of grace and salvation. Only through the fear of God in the face of our unrighteousness can we truly recognize the power of the gospel. The old testament is filled with testimonies of great men and women of God who trembled with fear in the sight of God. When confronted with their own weakness it is the fear of God’s righteous judgement that brought them to their knees in anguish over their sinful nature. He is the almighty God who created the heavens and Earth and yet we walk around as if we deserve the very breath he’s graciously given, as if we have it in us to sustain our lives without his grace and mercy.  We are a generation that has completely disregarded such a key  component of our christian walk the fear of the lord. Job is his understanding of the nature of God writes

“But he stands alone, and who can oppose him? He does whatever he pleases. He carries out his decree against me, and many such plans he still has in store. That is why I am terrified before him; when I think of all this, I fear him. God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me (Job 23:13-16).”

Fear of God is the beginning of Wisdom

If they could fear God, trembling in his sight who are we to walk around with arrogance rooted in intellectualism, thinking we can define truth on our own merits. We are told in Proverbs 1:7 that ” the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.” Without  the fear of God how can we truly speak of wisdom. How do we define what truth is without the foundation of God’s word that repeatedly reveal that to know God is to fear him. In essence how do we know truth without the wisdom rooted in fearing God. Modernity is driven by liberal notions of tolerance and the word of God is intolerant the very liberal ideas we advocate are born out of human enlightenment which is contrary to the word of God. We accept the very ideas that God hates because we’ve lost the fear of God, we actually believe that we are far too intellectual than God himself who has mandated us to live in accordance to his word.

In his letter to the church of Corinth Paul warns the church saying ” For it is written I will destroy the wise , and bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent , where is the wise, where is the scribe where is the disputer of this age has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world 1 Corinthians 1:19-20 “

The created has no authority over the Creator

We have absolutely no authority over God’s word, who are we to think that we can change it, to fit our sinful lives. The character of God remains the same from the book of Genesis to the revelation. His word from the old testament to the new testament has never failed in teaching the fear of the Lord.

“Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water” (Revelation 14:7).

The deceit begins when we try to define truth or what is morally right or wrong based on our very liberal ideals. When we  completely disregard what the scriptures teach in an attempt to become more politically correct the fear of God has departed from us. It is a shame that as Christians we are much more afraid of human criticism than the judgement of God. We can crave acceptance to the point of denying the very law that is preached in our bible, if we can’t stand for the very truth we claim has liberated us how do we expect anyone to believe what we deem to be absolute truths.

Fear God not man

“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Matthew 10:28”

What I try to remind myself at each waking day is that everything will eventually fade away the very people we fear more than God will return to dust and one day we will stand in front of a righteous God and tremble because we failed to speak the truth based on our convictions. We will realize that we were cowards in fear of judgement of man than of God. How sad would it be to live life trying to impress humans who have done nothing for your salvation. My prayer and hope for you and I is  to learn the fear of God, to be consumed by his holiness, to know that he loves us unconditionally and he is also capable of righteous judgement.

I hope you can mediate daily on 1 Peter 1:17 who writes:

“And if you call on the father , who without partiality judges according to each one’s work conduct yourselves  throughout the time of stay here in fear”
