To be Filled with Love

Ephesians 1:15-18

Ever since I first heard of your strong faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for God’s people everywhere,I have not stopped thanking God for you. I pray for you constantly, asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God. I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.

To Know the Love of God

To be filled with love is to be filled with the revelation of Jesus Christ. To grow in his knowledge means the widening capacity to receive the fullness of his love in the person of Jesus Christ. We have to begin everything from a place of being filled with the love of the father revealed to us in Christ Jesus. If we aren’t filled with the love of God we might be deceived and act out of an impure heart characterized by ill motive and intent. We have the Holy Spirit living in us and he reveals Jesus christ who is the only way to the father. Part of knowing God as Love is admitting that our perception of love is skewed by culture and our own experiences. Therefore in our expressions of love we are often limited in fully embodying the unconditional love of the father. The reason we fail to walk in oness with Christ is we filled with unbelief at the  the measure love of God has bestowed on us in Christ.

To Pray for others

One of the key indications that we are filled with the love of God is we intentionally pray for others, we honor and celebrate the presence of God in their lives.  Paul prayed for the church of Ephesus that they would grow in the knowledge of God through Spiritual wisdom and insight. I am so convicted because I barely spend any time praying for the body of Christ to be filled with the knowledge and wisdom of God. My prayers are often self centred only highlighting my needs, concerns and wants and forgetting that my life is literally attached to the body of Christ that his life flows in each believer. Paul’s prayer highlights the distinction in someone who is filled with the love of God, the ability to stand in honor and also to selflessly and humbly intercede for the body of Christ. Paul wanted nothing more for the church than to receive spiritual wisdom and insight of who God is. That the church would grow in the knowledge of the love of the father in Christ Jesus. Regardless of what season the church would confront they would be rooted in the love of the father. He prayed for them from a place of being filled with the love of the father which in turn dictated the trajectory of his prayers for the body  of Christ.

One with Christ

Our spirit has been made alive unto God and we are one with Jesus Christ. We have the spirit of God living in us at this very moment. Jesus Christ was filled with the love of the father and he prayed for his disciples tirelessly. It was his desire that the father would preserve them in his love and sanctify them in his truth. He was intentional in interceding for those who were called unto him. We have the spirit of christ living in us, we have the ability through the Holy Spirit to move beyond our self centeredness and live beyond our self interest. It is vital that we grow out of a selfish perception on our role on earth as part of the body of christ. We exist as a body of christ, made up of other believers united by the blood of Christ.

Living In Love

When we live in the awareness of the love of the father, we begin to see the body of Christ as part of our lives. We begin to live in the unity of Christ where our intent and motives for doing anything is hinged upon his love us. We have the Holy Spirit revealing to us the one who is love, so he also equips us to walk in the oness with Jesus Christ. Christ in turn reveals the heart of the father to us. When we are filled with the love of God we can begin to pray the will of God for his body. The will of God is that we would be one with Christ. it is only when we are filled with the love of the father that we can die to selfish lifestyle and begin to live sacrificially.

May God help us to lay down everything that hinders us from truly knowing him and receiving his love. To lay down every thought of pride, deception and ignorance that we anchor ourselves in to justify our lack of selflessness and humility in truly loving his people as he has loved us.

  1. Thank you for this. I think one thing we need to understand about each other in terms of different cultures is that we may express ourselves differently and even in the ways we show love (this also just happens individually regardless of culture) so we should be sensitive to that. Some people communicate love with touch, some with deeds and some with words. Jesus did all these things and so we should be open to them as well.
